"We could hear the birds sing" gives a voice to 100 people across France, reflecting on the COVID-19 pandemic and the successive lockdowns.
Together with Françoise Dorelli, we travelled throughout the country to meet people from all walks of life: butchers, primary school teachers, elected officials, Emmaus companions, nurses, former offenders, artists, entrepreneurs, and many others.
We photographed each participant and invited them to answer a questionnaire about the health crisis and their vision of France.
Reflexions about reconnecting with nature and developing a greater environmental awareness emerged time and again. Relationships with others also became a recurring theme, at a time when human contact was actively discouraged. Far from being defeatist, the responses are sometimes humorous, sometimes naïve, offering a portrait of a France filled with uncertainty, yet also resilient and determined to face the challenges ahead.
